The 49ers lost a starting receiver before the season even began. Ricky Pearsall will miss the entire 2026 season after knee surgery, 49ers president John Lynch confirmed, with Pearsall going on season-ending injured reserve to repair a PCL he first hurt during the 2025 season and re-aggravated in the first week of camp. That is a real, confirmed subtraction from a passing game that was counting on him, and it reshapes the target picture in San Francisco.
Pearsall's loss would sting on its own, but it does not land in a vacuum: Brandon Aiyuk is also currently listed as out on the 49ers' injury report. Two of the receivers San Francisco expected to lean on are unavailable to open the year, which turns what looked like a crowded room into a genuine opportunity for whoever is healthy.
The team moved to fill the void by bringing back Deebo Samuel Sr., who profiles as the most direct beneficiary. Deebo's dual-threat usage, snaps out of the backfield and manufactured touches on top of his route work, gives him a floor most complementary receivers do not have, and a thinned-out room only pushes more volume his way.
Mike Evans is the one to watch as the potential alpha. He is a proven high-volume, red-zone target when healthy, and with Pearsall out for the year and Aiyuk sidelined, the path to a true WR1 target share in San Francisco is wide open. His own status is worth monitoring on the injury report, but if he is right for Week 1, he is the biggest winner here.
Christian Kirk stands to soak up the underneath and slot volume that Pearsall would have taken, the kind of steady PPR role that plays up in a depleted room. And De'Zhaun Stribling, who flashed in the preseason, is now a deeper dart with a clearer runway to snaps than he had a month ago.
Injuries that end a season before it starts are exactly the news that should move a draft board, because they permanently change a team's target distribution rather than just a single week. Bump the healthy 49ers pass catchers up your board with Pearsall gone for the year: Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans first, Christian Kirk as a steadier PPR piece, Stribling as a late flier. Check where they all land now in the rankings, see how the best ball tool is pricing the new target share, and run the San Francisco room through the mock draft simulator before you commit a pick. Keep an eye on Aiyuk's status too, because his timeline changes this math again.
